If you have ever watched the TV series ‘The Bill’ you will have seen his work. His own road less traveled culminated in a twenty-part BBC 4 radio series ‘How to have the perfect marriage’ and featured on Woman’s Hour.
I have a different memory of Nicholas….
Torture Garden (or TG) is a fetish club in London, UK. The club started in 1990 and is now Europe's largest fetish club. It features dance floors, musical acts, performance art, fashion shows, and an S&M 'dungeon' [Wikipedia]
Brixton, London, St Matthews church. December 2008 and home to Torture Gardens Xmas party. Deep in the dungeons (real ones in their day) Nicholas -classical music sets the mood- is chained to a St Andrews Cross, leather Chaps and the rest, in the S&M sweatshop. My wife and I stand above him, she has whip in hand.….
Sherborne railway station , Dorset -thirteen years later –18th December 2021. Nicholas has agreed to tell his story. We meet, hug, but mask, no whip, or wife, in hand to welcome his arrival from Tooting London. Fire made, curry collected, Terry (co presenter and producer) joins us and we chat into the night. I make copious notes. Disaster as we are advised the recording studio is closed due to Covid.
The following morning we create a makeshift studio in the lounge. Terry sets up his mobile gear while I try and get my notes on one page, I give in. I have been nervous all week as not done any radio work for a long time. What if I get tongue tied and say the wrong things. Is like a tight feeling in my gut. I put on my headphone, similar feeling to running onto the rugby pitch -or on stage- nowhere to hide. Three deep breaths, a nod from Terry and the music begins..
